Author: Jay Boyer
Average review score:

Great presentation of the life of a great director
Jay Boyer transports us across the lifetime of a gifted director, illustrating the gowth, successes and failures of Bob Rafaelson, while punctuating it with fascinating life details. A scholarly writing with necessary references, yet told in a compelling, human way. I recommend this for anyone, student or afficionado.

Boleros (Princeton Series of Contemporary Poets)
Published in Paperback by Princeton Univ Pr (April, 1999)
Author: Jay Wright
Average review score:

A wonderful & complex suite of poems.
The most recent book from Jay Wright is a wondeful & complex suite of poems. His work is transparent & concrete. Transparent in that one finds that elusive character commenting on the observations of a particular place. Concrete through the profundity of his philosophical investigations. Wright delivers here one of his very best "collections". These are not separate poems, but an interlocking system of "thought experience". If you are looking for an introduction to Wright's work, I would suggest the Selected Poems, but if you are familiar with this most elegant of poets, you will love this "set".

The Broken Connection: On Death and the Continuity of Life
Published in Paperback by Basic Books (September, 1983)
Author: Robert Jay Lifton
Average review score:

What Death Reveals about Life
In ancient times, mythological systems and religious authorities told us what to think about death. How do we think about death in the modern secular world? The pre-eminent psychologist Robert Jay Lifton thinks that is one of the most important questions facing us today. This book looks at the question of death in the big picture. In the first part of the book, he traces individual development, and shows how the idea of death develops with the individual. In part two, he looks at the relationship of death to various emotions and to psychological disorders. In part three, he looks at the global picture, discussing what it means to live in a world with nuclear arms; here he cites from his extensive personal research with the survivors of Hiroshima. As Lifton argues, "We must open ourselves to the full impact of death in order to rediscover and reinterpret the movement and sequence of life" (p. 52). Indeed, contrary to what one might expect, this is a deeply optimistic and profoundly hopeful book.

Busting the Mob: United States V. Cosa Nostra
Published in Hardcover by New York University Press (November, 1994)
Authors: James B. Jacobs, Christpher Panarella, Jay Worthington, and Christopher Panarella
Average review score:

A book that is hard to refuse!
What mob figure is more famous than that of John Gotti? What was done to bring him down? How did the government finally manage to make the charges stick? Busting the Mob is a great insight into that very question.

While this book covers organized crime connection into the teamster union as well as other major mob bosses, it was the Gotti case that had me gripping the book tightly with a wealth of facts, witnesses and testimony.

Each case presented is in fact, well laid out, with actual trial testimony. There is actual court documents, investigation notes and so much more included. This book was well put together and an excellent read. What you read about the mob versus what is fact are usually two different things, this book may shock you in some cases, but it should open you eyes in all cases. Enjoyable and amazing and the price makes it hard for you to refuse!

Get this back in print
Poignant, timely, necessary. I couldn't put it down, nor could I stop with Butch II by the same author. Alyson dropped the ball on this one. Get the author to combine the two into one, write a third to continue the story and you have a bestseller!

Calculus

Average review score:

Outstanding text!
Brooks/Cole should keep this text in their catalog for ages! It is well-written, examples are generally quite clear, vocabulary is introduced well, and the exercises develop real skills, rather than simply be busy-work. One of the best calculus books ever!
